East Christchurch S.S.C. F.C.: a potted history! (31/03/08)
East Christchurch SSC FC is the latest incarnation of a football club that has been in existence at the Sports and Social club in Grange Road, Christchurch since 1980 when the subsection was created. Since then it has been known as Plessey Christchurch FC, Siemens Christchurch FC, British Aerospace FC and BAE Systems SSC FC before taking on its current guise at the beginning of the 2006-7 season.
The club, in its original form, began in the lowest of the Hayward Sunday League divisions and found its way to Division 5 before eventually suffering a decline into Division 9 by the late 1990's. At this point, when the club was British Aerospace, it created two teams with a first XI that, in its time, won Division 4 without dropping a single point, gained promotion a couple of years later to the Premier Division and reached a Robbins Cup Final in 1999. In parallel, the British Aerospace Reserve side gained successive promotions from Division 9 and 6 in 1999 and 2000.
When the first team went its separate ways in 2000, the reserve XI became the club's only team, taking on the mantle of BAE Systems SSC. In its first season under that name, the club gained promotion to Division 3 and won the Brivati Cup at Hurn Bridge, beating Brunswick Hotel 1-0 thanks to Andy Toomer's goal. Further promotions to Division 2 and Division 1 followed and, after only a single season in Division 1, BAE Systems SSC were promoted to the top division of Bournemouth football as Champions at the end of the 2005-6 campaign.
As East Christchurch SSC, the club has been in the Premier Division for 2 seasons and, after a tough baptism in the top flight during the 2006-7 season (when they finished 8th of the 11 sides), it has, of late, begun to establish itself with better results and performances. In doing so with a relatively young squad, it has given an indication of the possibility of a brighter, longer future for East Christchurch SSC FC.
